Why Simple and Enduring Businesses Often Attract Long-Term Investors

Investors have spent decades searching for the formula behind long-term success in the stock market. While there is no guaranteed strategy, many successful investors share a common philosophy: focus on businesses that are easy to understand and operate in industries that are likely to remain essential over time.

A recent report highlighted that only four companies listed on Brazil’s stock exchange (B3) managed to outperform the CDI benchmark every year since 2022. Interestingly, three of these companies operate in the energy sector, while the fourth belongs to telecommunications.

This observation aligns with ideas frequently associated with renowned investors such as Warren Buffett and Brazilian investor Luiz Barsi. Both have emphasized the importance of understanding a company’s business model and favoring businesses that provide products or services society consistently needs.

The Importance of Understanding a Business

Warren Buffett has often referred to the concept of a “circle of competence.” The principle is straightforward: investors should prioritize companies they can understand.

For example:

  • Electricity providers generate and distribute power.
  • Telecommunications companies enable communication and internet access.
  • Water and sanitation companies provide essential public services.

These businesses may not always generate headlines, but they often benefit from recurring demand. People need electricity, internet access, and water regardless of many economic cycles.

However, understanding a company’s business model is only one part of the equation. Investors should also evaluate financial health, management quality, competitive advantages, and regulatory environments.

Enduring Industries Are Not Risk-Free

Operating in an essential sector does not guarantee success.

Recent public discussions surrounding Sabesp illustrate this point. Following its privatization process, some consumers and observers have raised concerns regarding service-related issues and management decisions. Whether these concerns will have a lasting impact remains to be seen, but they serve as a reminder that investors should continuously monitor the companies they follow.

Markets evolve. Regulations change. Consumer expectations shift. Even companies operating in historically stable sectors can encounter significant challenges.

Looking Beyond Past Performance

One of the most common mistakes among investors is assuming that historical returns will continue indefinitely.

While past performance can provide useful context, it should never be considered a guarantee of future outcomes. Economic conditions, interest rates, technological developments, and political decisions can all influence corporate performance over time.

For this reason, many long-term investors prioritize ongoing education and diversification rather than relying exclusively on a company’s historical track record.

Final Thoughts

Simple businesses operating in essential industries often attract the attention of long-term investors because their products and services remain relevant across generations. The philosophies associated with Warren Buffett and Luiz Barsi continue to resonate with individuals seeking a disciplined approach to investing.

Nevertheless, every investment carries risks. Understanding a company’s operations, monitoring developments over time, and maintaining realistic expectations are all important components of responsible investing.
